Abstract Samir Abdel Hamid Ali . Study of the effect of depth on anode well cathodic protection. Faculty of Engineering. Ain Shams University . External corrosion can cause serious problems to underground metallic structures if not treated properly. National economies are hence badly affected due to the presence of corrosion on pipe lines, storage tanks and other kinds of transportation means. In oil and gas Production fields where corrosion is widely spread, external corrosion is almost mitigated by applying cathodic protection impressed current systems by means of transformer rectifiers. Shallow ground beds are usually used, but due to some circumstances, it becomes impossible to apply such systems, and alternative techniques as deep well anodes ground beds may be satisfactory used. Plain type of anode wells are frequently used. By time, soil pa..rticles penetrate well casing and surround anods. Resistance of anodes consequently change substantially, resulting considerable deviation in anode performance. The aim of the present research is to study the effect of depth on the performance of anodes related to impressed current cathodic protection systems. The electrical resistance of anodes installed deeper below ground surface, was theoretically investigated by Dwight Sunde who derived a formula for resistance as a function of both depth and surrounding soil resistivity. For this purpose, an experimental test system has been designed and constructed in Belayim Petroleum Company, Abu Madi gas plant, where corrosion problems are enormously found. |
