Abstract Pain is a protective mechanism designed to alert the body to potentially injurious stimuli. The international Association of Pain has been defined pain as ”An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage”. Intraspinal drug delivery is one of several important pain management therapies. Numerous delivery methods and drugs are available for administration into the epidural or intrathecal space. The choice of systems and drugs is based ,on the nature and duration of the patient’s pain, his or her other medical problems, and patient resources. Intraspinal opioids are widely used as useful adjuncts in the treatment of acute and chronic pain, and a number of non-opioid drugs show promise as analgesic drugs with spinal selectivity. Management of pain by intraspinal delivery of drugs enables physicians to target specific sites of action. |
