Abstract

TJ IC past decade has witnessed a rapid growth of interest in the development or fast and advanced marine vehicles fir various applications Whereas, in the past, the design of fast marine vehicle appeared to be of interest only to military applications, the most recent developments seem to be driven mainly by commercial applications. Hence, considerable efforts have been expended, worldwide, to develop new and innovative types of fast cargo and passenger ships in order to increase the share of waterborne transportation The Competitiveness of any transportation system depends on the price and quality or the offered services The inherent advantage of waterborne transportation, namely its low energy consumption per ton-kim suggests that, waterborne transp0l1ation appears to be a strong competitor to other transportation modes, Considering the rime factor as one of the most important elements or any transportation mode,’ it is evident that developments in sea shipping are interrelated with developments in fast sea transportation and 10 technological breakthroughs in unconventional ship designed and innovative port facilities, In this study the Wing in ground effects Crafts (WIG crafts) have been introduced as all example of advanced marine vehicles that represents the bright future of the waterborne transportation, The WIG; crafts offer all excepting capacity to fill the enormous void between speed of an aircraft and of the payload capacity of a ship, WIG vehicles can move cargo and passengers faster than a ship and more economical than aircraft The WIG crafts works near to the water or the ground surfaces and the benefit of operation in ground proximity is manifested in higher lift to drag ratio, The history of the development of the WIG crafts is given, Types, performance and regulations were also discussed, l.ill and drag produced by these types of crafts have been numerically calculated by using a vortex lattice numerical method,
