Abstract The aim of the present work is to investigate the indirect electrosynthesis of organic compounds using anthraquinone as an example in view of its industrial importance. The process involves two steps, namely: 1- Chemical oxidation of powered anthracene by acidified potassium dichromate in a batch stirred tank reactor 2- Electrochemical regeneration of hexavalent chromium by anodic oxidation of chromium sulphate produced during anthracene oxidation in a batch gas sparged two compartment cell The kinetics of the two steps was studied under different conditions. The effect of the following variables on the rate of chemical oxidation of anthracene was studied: 1- Impeller rotation speed 2- Concentration of K2Cr2O7 3- Temperature 4- Physical properties of the solution The effect of the following variables on the rate of anodic oxidation of chromium sulphate in a parallel plate electrolytic cell were studied 1- Concentration of Cr2(SO4)3 2- Current density 3- Superficial gas velocity. |
