Abstract

With the increasing demand and constant supply that characterize transportation systems, traffic problems occur, causing not only economical but also psychological and health problems. Many solution are being devised to improve the efficiency of transportation network. In this work, we propose an in – vehicle route guidance system that is used to help travelers find their optimum routes. The system is characterized by three essential properties: firstly, it is based on a fastest path criterion. Secondly, it is predictive, I.e., decisions are not only based on current delays experienced in the transportation network but also take into account the best roures for every traveler that will be the least congested when he/she reaches these routes. Thirdly, it requires a zero communication infrastructure investment since it is based on a vehicle-to-vehicle architecture. The proposed system is based on a distributed peer- to- peer version of the original simulation based dynamic traffic assignment algorithm. Therefore, the problem is solved entirely using moving vehicles. Performance evaluation of the system is conducted using a traffic simulator that is used to assess the proposed algorithms ability to route vehicles efficiently. The traffic simulator is adapted to take into account the wireless network performance aspects. Simulation results showed that the proposed system is able to route vehicles efficiently, even for low penetration ratios.
