Abstract

Superficial infections of the skin by fungi and yeasts constitute a large section of clinical dermatology. They III include Pityriasis versicolor and Dermatophytosis, which are classified clinically in to T. capitis, T. cruris, T. cor- poris, T.pedis, T.manus, T.barbae, T.facii, T.imbricata and Onychomycosis. Their incidence and distribution have been studied extensively in various geographic areas, however most data are limited to the isolation and identification of the dermatophytes. Additional information often res tricted to the anatomical sites from \lhich the causative agents have been isolated. Therefore the present work was designed to study the prevalence of superficial fungal infec tions among school children in Alexand(ia and to study the various ecological factors related to the occurrence of the disease. One primary, one male and one female preparatory school from the six educational zones of Alexandria were selected randomly. One class was selected from each schooler year in each school of the sample. A total of 3064 school chil dren were examined for the presence of fungal skin diseases. m pos’itive cases and a matching equal number of children free from infection were included in the study. A questio-n naire sheet including personal and socioeconom..,.ic data was completed for each c.hild. Scrapings from the lesions were collected for direct microscopic examination to confirm clinical diagnosis. The data were recorded and subjected to statistical analy sis in accordance with the study objectives.
