Abstract

The incidence of V. parabaemolyticus in sea water is of special interest from the public health point of view, since must outbreaks of gastroenteritis caused by th.ls pathogen have been traced to the consumption of contaIn1neted sea foods.. .Therefore , this study was aiming at the isolation and , enumeration of this organism from sea water by MF and MTD teohniques and oowpar1son between the results of both techniques, A total of 500 sea water samples were oolleoted from 5 sites along the inshore of Alexandria beaches, Maamoura, Mandara, Glym, Sporting and Anfoshi (100 for each) , with the exception of Maamoura, these beaches were known to be ’polluted with sewage. The samples were collected twice a week. The ~D technique described by Kaneko et al (1973) and the MF technique described by Millipore corporation (1970) and Watkins et al (1976) were used for isolation and enumera ation of 1. parahaemolyticus. The results of this study revealed that 1 (i) Out of a total 500 examined sea water samples; 68 (13.6) were’ positive for V. Parahaemolyticus by MTD and MF techniques; 37 (54..41)were positive by both techniques; .. 13 (19.12)were positive by MF techniques only; 2(2#~) were positive by MTD technique only and 16 (23.53)were positive by MTD teclmique and not done ’by wr technique. The percentage of agreement between these two techniques was 71.15 . sea water samples were examiBed. out et these 1}(10~ were positive for l. parabaemolyticus by MF (TOBS) and MF (mvp) techniques; 11 (84.6i) were positive by both techni~ 2 (15,,’9) were positive by MF (TaBS) only.
