Abstract In this study, the 5 units, 5000 m3/day RO desalination plant in Taba city in south Sinai, Egypt is exploited to be a case study. The measurements have shown that the actual plant capacity ranges between 2370 and 3700 m3/day because one unit is out of duty. The potential impact of RO desalination systems on the marine life is discussed. Besides, experimental tests are carried out to investigate the influence of brine discharge on the conductivity and total dissolved solids (TDS) at eleven points around the discharge point. The temperatures at these points are also measured. Results have shown, for increasing the length of discharge pipe to 50 m, the salinity of the discharge is decreased to 38000 ppm and the temperature of the discharge brine is decreased to 27 oC. The salinity and temperature are inversely proportional with the pipe length. Moreover, the dilution factor (DF) is decreased for increasing the pipe length. |
