Abstract

Phosphorus is essential to all known life forms. It is the second most abundant mineral in the human body, surpassed only by calcium. Phosphoric acid is the second only to sulfuric acid in volume produced in the world. About 95 % of the phosphate rock mined is used to produce fertilizers, animal feeds and pesticides. Meanwhile, phosphorus compounds are important ingredients in various other sectors including pharmaceutical, food industry, and in new high tech applications, such as sensors. Although, Sebaiya plateau has a huge reserve of phosphate ore which reaches, phosphoric acid produced from Sebaiya phosphates has low quality as a result in its high content of Fe2O3 and other impurities. In the same time, the production of phosphoric acid from Sebaiya rocks, with high iron content, causes low filterability of gypsum and low P2O5 recovery. The present work aims to study the leaching of Sebaiya phosphate rock by nitric acid then precipitation of calcium monohydrogenphosphate from acidulate solution in order to decrease production equipments and production cost. Finally, the use of calcium monohydrogenphosphate for production of relatively pure phosphoric acid is studied. The results of experimental are discussed. This consists of five main parts: leaching of Sebaiya phosphate ore by nitric acid; treatment of the filtrate solution by calcium carbonate to produce calcium monohydrogenphosphate (CHP) of animal fodder purity; regeneration of nitric acid from raffinate solution; production of high purity phosphoric from calcium monohydrogenphosphate and removal of iron from phosphoric acid produced from Sebaiya phosphate ore through leaching with HNO3 using (P (AM-AA)-TS).
