Abstract

Hip preserving surgery is any procedure, other than joint replacement, which addresses the symptoms that the patient has as a result of an abnormal hip joint. The goals of this surgery are to alleviate hip symptoms, improve the functional capacity of the hip and delay or prevent the biologic cascade of degenerative hip disease. Around 1% of persons under 55 years of age suffer from hip arthritis. This prevalence has remained unaltered in the last few decades. Hip arthritis may be primary which is made by exclusion if it is not possible to identify a specific cause, or secondary which is caused by a specific etiological agent such as, trauma, infection, avascular necrosis, hip dysplasia, slipped upper femoral epiphysis, and Perthes’ disease. The most common hip preserving surgeries are surgical dislocation of hip, osteotomies around hip joint and hip arthroscopy.
