Abstract

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by an inappropriate immune response to an infection and is a major cause of death globally. Most infections associated with sepsis are due to Gram-positive bacteria followed by Gram-negative bacteria. People who are elderly, immunocompromised, or neutropenic (have an abnormally low levels of white blood cells) are the most likely to develop a septic response to an infection. Sepsis is described as an autodestructive process that permits the extension of the normal pathophysiologic response to infection resulting in multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Organ dysfunction or organ failure may be the first clinical sign of sepsis, and no organ system is immune to the consequences of the inflammatory excesses of sepsis. Early diagnosis is necessary to properly manage sepsis, as initiation of early goal directed therapy is key to reducing mortality from severe sepsis. Protective and supportive measures for a critically ill patient should be set in place. These provisions include ensuring adequate nutrition, treating hyperglycemia, and prophylaxis against deep venous thrombosis and stress ulcers.
