Abstract

Bridges are one of the vital structures and one of the most important infrastructure assets. There are many problems affect on steel bridges such as maintenance lack, deterioration, high cost construction, environmental affect, corrosion rate and fatigue failure. Steel bridges have to perform in an outdoor environment with relatively large temperature changes and subjected to millions of cycles of live loading and are often exposed to corrosive environments containing chlorides. So that deterioration - corrosion - is one of the most obstacles which faced steel bridge after construction all over its age. In this thesis, the deterioration prediction of steel bridges is studied by Markov chain model. It doesn’t be occur unless deterioration degree of element for steel bridge won’t estimate as it is very useful for monitoring and maintenance corrosion. Markov model is the widely method used in estimating deterioration. There are many methods for estimating deterioration such as Artificial Intelligence, Weibull model, regression analysis, Markov chain model, non-linear optimization, percentage prediction .... etc. Deterioration occurs as a result of corrosion of steel elements of bridge: stringers, cross girders and main girders. The representation of deterioration prediction is a technique defined by visualization. Deterioration is visualized by using coding where each deterioration degree of steel bridge expressed by a color. Steel element deterioration can’t be seen by naked eye because especially steel element due to their small sizes. Visualization of deterioration prediction with color coding has been done using Building Information Modeling (BIM). It is a 3D digital representation for structures and its characteristics by intelligent components. Also, BIM can be used a virtual simulation tool for the entire construction project’s life cycle through a digital database of steel bridge. By this visualization of deterioration prediction, decisions could be decided. Thesis Objectives: 1.Investigate traditional asset management systems and identify potential improvements that are related to condition assessment, deterioration prediction, repair strategies. 2.Use the condition assessment data to develop time-dependent deterioration model by Markov chain process. 3.Use Markov chain model to predict deterioration of steel bridges. 4.Represent prediction deterioration model of steel bridges by Building Information Modeling (BIM).
