This thesis aims to present a more interpretations for the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century AD. In fact, civilizations arose in response to some set of challenges. Every civilization exposed to many challenges, but the responses to these challenges were different according to many reasons. Late Antiquity, in general, is currently something of a popular subject in historiography. Moreover, the end of the Roman Empire created a lot of historical problems and many questions. Although the West was collapse, the East continued to identify himself as Roman Empire. However, if we considered the changes which occurred in the fifth century, we will find ourselves in front of a new era. In the fifth century, the Western Empire suffered several setbacks. The collapse and end of the Roman Empire in the fifth century remains a topic of interest and debate. In addition, the end of Roman rule in the West was a complicated process. This decline can not be explained based on a particular reason. The political and social turmoil swirling around the Western empire in the early fifth century, and before, accelerated the continued erosion in the empire’s structure. Thus the purpose of this work is to study many challenges and its results in the western empire during the fifth century. It will also demonstrate the nature of the Roman interaction towards these challenges. This thesis will offer an overview of the major challenges within these main questions: What was the result of the isolation of the Western emperors and the power struggle especially in the imperial court? What was the vital role of the German leaders? What about the Germanic settlement in the west and how did it work? Did the cultural of the later Roman Empire changed by the barbarian tribe’s culture? Finally, what was the role of the Roman Church? How did the papacy treat the christological Controversies? All of the thesis chapters aim to offer answers to these questions through presenting an examination of the various forces within the empire.
