Abstract

Pragmatics is the branch of linguistics that studies how utterances convey meaning in context. This thesis aims at analyzing the intended meaning and the use of conversational implicature of the characters’ utterances in chosen novel Bonfire of the vanities in 1989 by the famous journalist and novelist Tom Wolfe which is displays the worst of human nature, and very little of the good of New York society .We try to describe how are the characters’ utterances’ in conversation analyzed by using Grice’s theory of conversational implicature. Grice says that conversational implicature can be defined as a depending on features of conversational situation or context and not just on conventional meaning of the words used. Conversational implicature is divided into two types; those are generalized implicature and particularized implicature. Generalized is one the type of conversational implicature which is the idea of the utterances are easily defined by the interlocutors. Since this type does not require special knowledge. Meanwhile particularized is one the type of conversational implicature which the meaning of the utterances is hardly to be understood by the interlocutors. Particularized conversational implicature arise because of some special factor inherent in the context of utterance and are not normally carried by the sentence used. Theoretically, in communication, people should apply the cooperative principle that consists of four maxims of conversation. They are maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relevance, and maxim of manner. According to Grice (1975), people should obey those maxims in order to have an effective communication without any miscommunication. In fact, people sometimes flout the maxims. People mostly have reason behind flouting the maxims. Therefore, in this study, we are interested in analyzing the type of maxims in Bonfire of the Vanities novel, the reason of the flouting maxims, and the consequences of the flouting maxims. This study is divided into four parts. The first part consists of an introduction that deals with the Problem of the study, aims of the study, limits of the study, hypothesis, method of research, and Tom Wolfe as the champion of New Journalism. Chapter two, theoretical background presents the literature review of the subject. Part three, the discussion presents the research findings and explanations in analyzing the characters’ utterances that have been found. The Forth part contains of conclusions that the researcher arrives at.
