Abstract

In the research approach on highlighting the impacts of urban design on human behavior through addressing human needs, crafts were used as the bridging medium. The importance of the crafts in documenting history was pointed out, in addition to the strategies to integrate crafts in economic development strategies. Supporting craftsmen and helping them to find new channels to spread their work can help them survive and overcome automation and industrialization dominance in the same time of preserving heritage and identity. Daily motives are derived from human needs. Behavior and interaction patterns with the surrounding environment are all dependent on the connection between oneself and the circumstances, wither it consider his needs or not, and correlate his behavior accordingly. The research explored this in Al Azhar Park and Child Culture Park case studies where applications on how to preserve moral and physical heritage were illustrated, in addition to how belonging levels is impacted by fulfilling needs. There is a need for exploring new development approaches to vitalize Egyptian economy and tourism. The research was oriented to developing tourism development plans that depend on crafts. Two similar cases were analyzed where development strategies were carried out in a craftsmanship zone that resulted in turning them into an international attraction destination for crafts. The two case studies were Tunis Village in Egypt, and Zaanse Schans village in Netherlands. Constituents for touristic regions were reviewed, analyzed, and projected on the case studies. Which resulted in developing an analysis map and framework that can help developing strategies for interventions in crafts area and assess challenges that can be faced to turn it into a craft tourism zone. Traditional and local industries play a major role in the formation of a person culture as well as belonging levels. The emphasize an area’s style that express its history can positively affect those. Crafts would be part of that style. Building on a place history through a consistent strategy that includes built environment; the incubator for the activities interactions, and economic base; crafts that act as the medium where people use to address their human needs. AbdulRahman street in Damietta was chosen as an investigation study, where the craft to be revitalized is O’yma. The vision is to make the street a national and international touristic attraction by the craftsmanship practiced in it. O’yma is an authentic craft that was found in Ancient Egypt and was totally formulated in Othman period. The development strategy for the street was formulating around the fulfillment of human needs and urban development that is appropriate with the street environment. The strategy approach was structured around human needs and addressing it through revitalizing O’yma craft practicing, mentoring and sales. It still holds an important place in furniture products and still have some customers that appreciate handwork. The connection between built environment and human needs though handcrafts is by creating an employment/ entrepreneurial framework that allows people to take ownership to their places and their development. This approach opens further research questions and points, as well as showing potentials for investments opportunities that can help Egypt prosper and develop. The improvement of the built environment according to people needs can help increasing belonging levels. Handcrafts, being place/ resource/ traditions connected, is one of the best ways to achieve that. Behavior can be positively affected with higher belongingness levels. Egypt needs people that feel belonging to the country of seven thousands years history and who can act in a consistent manner.
