Abstract

The overriding purpose of this study was to determine the relative importance of the application of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system as a curriculum organizer Tools for getting a sustainable and eco-friendly building and community as well in Egypt. Through the application and assessment process on the proposed case study El-Dakahlia Governmental Headquarter building (Existing Building - Major Renovation) as a case study to achieve sustainability requirements which results in getting a sustainable and ecofriendly buildings and communities. To accomplish those goals it became necessary to reach some relevant prerequisites and credits goals to achieve the desired LEED certification level to get the governmental headquarter ready to become LEED certified building, which subsequently transforming the traditional building to be sustainable. Therefore, major renovation process have been applied on the nominated building according to LEED Building Design and Construction V4 Rating System requirements to improve and promote the mentioned building to be eligible for LEED Certificate thus getting Green Building. Research hypothesis, which should be verified through this thesis, that the application of LEED Rating systems on the existing buildings is it applicable in Egypt and will promote and upgrade conventional building to become an ecofriendly a sustainable building? The major renovation processes which are the overriding purpose that have been illustrated and implemented through integrate and incorporate the traditional external envelope of El-Dakahlia Governmental Headquarter building with the relevant curtain wall system to improve the quality view and increasing the occupant connectivity with the environment which increasing their productivity as well and also minimizing and reducing the building energy consumptions according to the recommendations of the energy modeling which have been implemented on the existing building which propose the right and significant solutions as a corrective action for the actual conditions of that traditional building. On the other hand, to reduce the consumption of potable water inside and outside the building is the second significant solution in addition to alternative water sources, which also will results in reduction in the energy consumption as well. In light of mentioned thesis’ context and the main target of this research can conclude and illustrate, that the lower performance of existing building with its negative impacts on the environment, economic and human - triple bottom line can be promoted and upgraded through the application of sustainability and LEED requirements for better and healthy building with a higher efficiency performance, which is perform better than other conventional, where Green buildings are saving energy, using less water, generating less waste and provides a higher levels of indoor quality and comfort over conventional design and construction practices and provide higher levels of occupant satisfaction with regards to air quality and lighting. All related studies herein through this research study indicate a significant gains with occupant productivity and show that these benefits can translate into a 2% to 16% increase in employee productivity and lower running cost as well.
