Abstract

Cold-formed steel members are used widely in the building structure industry, especially in housing, commercial and industrial building. The main objective of this research is to experimentally and analytical investigate the cyclic behavior of batten steel column with different slenderness ratios and various batten plate thickness, the different distance between two longitudinal chords and different spacing between batten plates. Fifteen batten steel columns subjected to constant axial load and varying cyclic lateral loads had been carried out. An analytical work using the finite element method with the aid of the computer program ABAQUS had been carried out to verify the applicability of the method for the prediction of the response. The experimental results showed a clear difference between the variables parameters that have been studied in this research and divided into different groups to show the effect of each parameter on the behaviour of columns regarding the load failure and mode deformation. from the result, we can say that the increase of the batten plate thickness will increased more than the length on the load failure and mode failure of the steel column, increase of spacing between the chords decrease the load failure of column with decreased the displacement and strain energy and decreasing the distance between the batten plate will increase the failure load and strain energy and changed the mode of failur. The finite element software ABAQUS is used to model the batten steel column specimens. Models predicted global behavior, strength degradation, and yielding resulting from local buckling at large deviation. Models subjected to both axial and lateral cyclic loading sequences. Analysis results can be used successfully to simulate the seismic behavior of battens steel columns in experimental.
