Abstract

Inpatient spaces of healthcare buildings lack to apply the principles of sustainability in the construction and environmental considerations in the design which had led to either uncomfortable spaces or a wide use of air condition to provide thermal comfort and high performance healing environments. Therefore, healthcare buildings consume a large amount of energy to provide thermal comfort for patients as they spend a long time inside inpatient rooms. In Egypt, healthcare buildings are energy-intensive buildings, according to reports from the Egyptian ministry of electricity, so the challenge is to reduce energy use in healthcare facilities while enhancing patient outcomes. As inpatient spaces compose the largest volume of hospital buildings and its external envelope represent the most significant part of these buildings, Sustainable design for them are the best choice to achieve energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality in healthcare buildings. In addition, there are several studies proved that elements of green building can positively influence patient health, leading to faster healing times and shorter hospital stays. This research studies the ability to achieve energy efficiency in healthcare building and reduce carbon emissions by sustainable design of inpatient spaces with using of digital simulation software which is a good tool to compare different strategies and techniques used in inpatient spaces to achieve conservation in energy use. The research proves that using of sustainable techniques in inpatient spaces has numerous impacts, and it could achieve energy efficiency of healthcare building. This research recommends using sustainable architectural techniques to achieve energy efficiency in healthcare building and reduce of carbon emission.
