Abstract

The present study include Bio-hydrogen production and hydrogen yield by Escherichia coli NRRL B-3008, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 and Enterobacter aerogenes DSM 30053 from domestic wastewater, industrial wastewater and El-Salam canal water were used as substrates using microbial electrolysis cells ( MECs ) as bio-electrochemical reactor. Three volumes of anode chamber in MECs 300ml, 400 ml and 500 ml were applied. Salt bridge was used for the exchange of protons from anode chamber to cathode chamber. External voltage of 0.4 V, 0.6 V and 0.8 V was applied to MECs using a regulated power supply. The results of the present investigation are described as follows: Industrial wastewater is good substrate for bio-hydrogen and hydrogen yield production in MECs with and without addition of bacteria. Enterobacter aerogenes DSM 30053 produced the highest volume of Bio-H2 316 cm3 and the highest hydrogen yield 91.17 % production from domestic wastewater in MECs at the anode chamber 500 ml with power supply 0.4 V. Escherichia coli NRRL B-3008 produced the highest volume of Bio-H2 358.24 cm3 and the highest hydrogen yield 93.64 % production from industrial wastewater in MECs at the anode chamber 500 ml with power supply 0.8 V. Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 produced the highest volume of Bio-H2 148.25 cm3 and the highest hydrogen yield 75.29 % production from EL-Salam canal water in MECs at the anode chamber 500 ml with power supply 0.4 V.
