Abstract

Recently, the number of users for wireless communications has increased tremendously, so wireless communications networks should have enough capabilities to efficiently serve all these users. The main capabilities are capacity and available bandwidth. The unlicensed 60 GHz bands is an attractive opportunity as it provides bandwidth up to 7 GHz. Also, frequency reuse is available in this band as the 60 GHz waves are attenuated by atmospheric gases. The key factor in the use of the 60 GHz band is the antenna design. In this thesis, two designs around 60GHz are introduced. The first is 60 GHz Compact Omnidirectional Printed Antenna that is compact sized dipole. The antenna is designed to be attached to RF chip of GSSG feeding standard. Good matching below -10 dB is obtained. The second design is slot antenna array of eight elements, with maximum gain 17.7dBi and high efficiency above 94%.The high performance antenna array can overcome the high propagation losses. In order to enhance the capacity of the communication system, smart antenna arrays have emerged in wireless communications as one of the most promising technologies for increasing the spectral efficiency and improving the performance of the present and future wireless communication systems. Beam-forming and directional of arrival estimation (DoA) are the brain of smart antenna. One of the main objectives of our work is to build a smart antenna system that is suitable for the 60 GHz applications through these issues: Introducing a high performance 60 GHz antenna arrays. Designing and implementation DoA estimation algorithm on an Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) chip, and Designing and implementation a novel synthesizing algorithm that can be used in beam adaptation. The DoA and beam forming need real time processing so, FPGA is the best solutions as baseband signal processor. In this work, the DoA algorithm is partially implemented and downloaded over an FPGA (Spartan 3AN kit) using Xilinx ISE Design Suite 13.1 software. In order to achieve the beam adaptation, we introduce a novel algorithm called MoM/PSO to synthesize arbitrary-shaped radiation pattern due to its efficient performance. Novel adaptive multi-beam-forming based MoM algorithm is introduced. The algorithm is implemented on USRP N210.
