Abstract

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia encountered in clinical practice with its prevalence is going up worldwide, leading to a cardiovascular “epidemic. Quality of life and exercise capacity are significantly impaired in AF patients. Exercise training programs have shown positive effects for patients with cardiac disorders. Most of studies done at Mansoura among cardiac patients reported that the majority of patients are non compliant with exercises. Pedometers are motivational and monitoring tools that allow immediate reporting of steps taken and encourage patient adherence to exercise programs. The aim of the study: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of aerobic walking program using pedometer self monitoring on quality of life among patients with atrial fibrillation. Research hypothesis: Patients who attend educational sessions related to aerobic walking program will have better knowledge regarding atrial fibrillation management including pedometer use and aerobic walking exercises than non attending. Patients who practice 12 weeks of aerobic walking program using pedometer self monitoring will have significant improvement in step count, pulse rate and QOL than non practicing.
