Providing safe and affordable housing is one of the main priorities of development in both developed and developing societies. It is one of the basic needs to every family. Without appropriate housing, man cannot be productive in his society. Egypt currently faces a number of problems due to the population increase and migration from rural to urban areas. With expansion of slums around most existing cities, And encroachment on agricultural and state lands. The Egyptian government has tried to overcome the housing crisis and its result by starting public affordable housing projects.The research problem is that ”many of the public resources are directed towards the establishment of low-income housing projects, the results of these projects are not tangible, With the continued problems of energy, water, slums, encroachment on agricultural land and environmental problems”. The research aims to “study how sustainable social housing can be applied in Egypt” to be the nucleus of new sustainable urban communities, and can overcome current and future challenges and problems in Egypt”.The research consists of introduction, and three parts to examine the theoretical hypotheses and achieve the objectives of the study, beside conclusions and recommendations. Part one studies concepts and challenges of sustainable social housing, through Three chapters; Chapter I deals with social housing components, chapter II discusses the challenges of sustainable development in Egypt, and chapter III deals with sustainability in architecture. Part two studies the mechanisms of achieve sustainable social housing through Four chapters; chapter I defines sustainable affordable housing, chapter II deal with sustainable social housing, chapter III studies the sustainable neighborhood, and Chapter IV examines the models of sustainable social housing projects. Part three deals with governmental housing in Egypt, through four chapters; chapter I studies the governmental housing programs in Egypt, chapter II studies current housing projects in Egypt, chapter III analyzes samples of government housing projects in Egypt, and chapter IV the analyses of the case study (Misr Spinning & Weaving Company) which is one of the government housing projects in el-mehala el-Koubra city in Egypt.The research concluded with a set of recommendations that help enhance the quality of government housing projects in Egypt and implement sustainable social housing strategies that can overcome institutional, environmental, social, economic and cultural challenges.
