Abstract

Objective: To compare and test the bond strength, enamel surface characteristics and adhesive remnant index (ARI) of orthodontic brackets using carbon dioxide (CO2) laser versus acid etch and self etch adhesives. Materials and methods:sixty-three extracted premolars were divided into three groups. Three teeth were used for atomic force examination one from each group. group (A) was treated with one step self etch, followed by group (B) with conventional two steps acid etch and finally the group (C) with co2 laser. Results: the shear bond strength showed no significant (p>0.05) differences between (group Aand group B) and (group 2 and group 3). On the other hand, there was a statistical significant difference (p<0.05) in shear bond strength between (group A and group C). The evaluation of surface roughness showed that there were statistically no significant (p>0.05) differences between (group Aand group B). But there were statistical significant differences in surface roughness between group A and group B, and between group B and group C. The ARI evaluation for failure modes between groups was statistically significant. Generally more adhesive was left on the enamel surface with acid etch technique. Conclusion:the mean shear bond strength and enamel surface etching obtained with CO2 laser is comparable to that obtained with both acid-etch and self-etch.
