Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effects of light quality on growth, photosynthetic pigments , carbohydrate content, nitrogen content, antioxidant enzymes, protein content, protein patterns and ultra-structure of Zea mays and Lupinus termis seedlings subjected to different visible wavelengths of light emitting diodes; LEDs (white, red, blue, yellow and green). After 10 days of exposure of maize to light treatments, both blue and yellow light treatments caused a significant increase in the all estimated growth parameters, but red light caused a significant decrease in length and shoot fresh weight and decreased root length and root fresh & dry weights significantly. Regarding the green light treatment, it cause a general significant increase in shoot and root lengths, shoot and root dry weights and root fresh weight. On the other hand, shoot fresh weight was decreased significantly as compared with control values. Total pigments were significantly decreased by various light treatments except in case of red light which caused non-significant increase. Total carbohydrates were increased significantly by different light treatments except blue light which decrease them non-significantly. A general significant increase in ammonia nitrogen, amide nitrogen and insoluble protein nitrogen was recorded in maize plant by different light treatments. After 20 days of exposure of maize to light treatments, it was detected that red light treatment caused a general significant increase in shoot & root lengths, shoot dry weight and root fresh & dry weights, but it caused a significant decrease in shoot fresh weight. The determined growth parameters significantly increased by blue and yellow light treatments except the significant decrease in shoot fresh weight with blue light. The green light treatment caused a significant increase in shoot and root lengths and root dry weight and significant decrease in shoot fresh and dry weights and root fresh weight as compared to white light values. Total pigments were decreased significantly in yellow and green and increased in case of red light treatment. Total carbohydrates were significantly increased by the different light treatments except with blue light that caused a significant decrease. Total soluble nitrogen and total nitrogen decreased significantly by all light treatments in maize, while a general significant increase in ammonia nitrogen in case of red, blue and green light but significantly decreased by yellow light as compared to white light.
