Abstract

Reflector-less total stations is used nowadays for several applications in geodetic engineering due to their highly accurate and fast measurements in measuring process. As, there could be many reasons that points are inaccessible, including safety concerns, detail surveys of busy road intersections where traffic control is undesirable or impossible, or simply finding locations of jetty piles where access simply isn’t possible. The problem arises then, of the accuracy that is given by such technological techniques. Whereas most survey measurements either are or at least can be checked for errors, reflector-less measurements, by their very nature of being inaccessible, are very hard to check. How then, can we rely upon such measurements, especially when high accuracy results are essential. As the new materials and technologies are increasingly applied to construction of civil structures such as tanks, dam and tunnels, the need for structural monitoring systems, maintenance and restoration becomes more important and vital. Tanks are widespread in every society and affect its human, social, economic and cultural aspects. Measurements and monitoring of the structural deformation of elevated tanks have an essential role in structural safety. This thesis investigates an integrated monitoring system for estimation of the deformation behavior of one of elevated water tank in Egypt. The applied data for analyzing the deformation of any structure from geodetic observations are the coordinates of several monitoring points distributed on the outer surface of structure itself. The coordinates of these points are calculated with respect to control fixed points.
