Abstract

The concept of sustainability and eco-friendly buildings has become one of the most important international architectural issues that we live now and is a major concern of many researchers, engineers and architects. This concept is aimed primarily at reducing the effects of urbanization on the environment; pollution of the environment, depletion of resources and energies, and impacting on human health. As existing buildings constitute the vast majority of the urban environment and they aren’t compatible or partially compatible with the concept of sustainability and depleting resources and pollution of the environment, it is necessary to pay attention to this category of buildings and work to rehabilitate them to comply with the standards of environmental accreditation systems. This study will examine the techniques that reduce the effects of existing buildings, whether consumption of energy and water, the quality of the internal environment, or the site and transportation. That after determining a general strategy, derived from environmental accreditation systems, to evaluate existing buildings and identify their weaknesses. The research then concludes a general strategy that facilitates the selection of appropriate techniques for the renovated building in accordance with its requirements. The research ends with a set of complete solution models, which vary according to the available cost for the building renovation process, the level of expected efficiency after the renovation process, and finally the duration of the renovation process. Providing access to an integrated system for the renovation and rehabilitation of existing buildings. The research structure consists of a theoretical study in which the problems of existing buildings in the world in general and in Egypt in particular are determined, and international and local environmental accreditation systems are studied. The theoretical study ends with a general methodology to evaluate the existing buildings. An analytical study in which models of renovated existing buildings are analyzed and the techniques used in the renovation process are analyzed. The analytical study ends with the strategy used in selecting the appropriate techniques for the building. An applied study in which the case study is analyzed and evaluated, and the strategy of selecting techniques is applied. The applied study ends with developing models of the proposed solutions, which vary according to cost, efficiency and duration.
