Abstract

A laboratory experiment was carried out at Agronomy Department Laboratory of Seed Testing, Faculty of Agriculture, Mansoura University, Egypt, during November and December 2016 to investigate the influence of various antioxidants types and levels on germination and seedling growth performance of wheat cultivars under salinity stress conditions. The experiment was conducted in factorial experiment in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications. The experiment included three factors. The first factor included four cultivars of wheat (Sakha 94, Misr1, Misr 2 and Gemmiza 12The second factor integrated with seven soaking seed treatments of each wheat cultivar in three antioxidants types (humic acid, salicylic acid and ascorbic acid) at two levels of each one (100 and 200 ppm) for 12 hours, besides control treatment (without soaking).the third factor incorporated of five levels of salinity as sodium chloride (NaCl) i.e. without salinity (0), 40, 80, 120 and 160 mM of NaCl.The main results could be summarize that:The results indicated that final germination percentage, germination energy percentage, germination index, the mean germination time, shoot length, root length, seedling vigor index, shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, total chlorophylls, germination stress tolerance index, shoot length stress index, root length stress index, shoot fresh stress index, root fresh stress index, shoot dry stress index and root dry stress index were significantly differed by studied bread wheat cultivars. The results indicated that final germination percentage, germination energy percentage, germination index, the mean germination time, shoot length, root length, seedling vigor index, shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, total chlorophylls, germination stress tolerance index and shoot length stress index were significantly affected by studied antioxidants concentrations. However, root length stress index, shoot fresh stress index, root fresh stress index, shoot dry stress index and root dry stress index were not significantly affected by studied antioxidants concentrations. The results indicated that final germination percentage, germination energy percentage, germination index, the mean germination time, shoot length, root length, seedling vigor index, shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, total chlorophylls, germination stress tolerance index, shoot length stress index, root length stress index, shoot fresh stress index, root fresh stress index, shoot dry stress index and root dry stress index were significantly affected by studied salinity concentrations. For maximizing germination and seedling parameters of bread wheat cultivars under salinity stress, it could be recommended to soaking Misr 1 or Gemmiza 12 cultivar in Humic acid or Ascorbic acid at 200 ppm for 12 h.
