Abstract

The control of interdialytic weight gains (IDWG) is a challenging part of diet counseling for patients on hemodialysis so; those patients have to follow nutrional guidelines to decrease potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and fluids intake, reduce the risk of complications, and improve patients’ quality of life. Hemodialysis nurse plays an important role in informing the hemodialysis patient about proper nutritional guidelines because nutritional intervention is a cornerstone strategy in the management of hemodialysis patients with interdialytic weight gain. Aim of the study: This study aimed to Evaluate effect of developed nutritional guidelines on interdialytic weight gain among hemodialysis patients. Materials and Method: Quasi experimental research design was utilized in this study on 70 hemodialysis patients. Results: In relation to HD patient’s knowledge about nutritional guidelines, the result showed significant improvement in HD patient’s knowledge about nutritional guidelines as manifested by 98.6% of the HD patients were poor in knowledge during pretest which decreased to 47.1% during post test, in addition to, 1.4% of HD patients were fair in knowledge during pretest which increased to 52.9% during post test. Concerning to IDWG, the result revealed significant reduction in mean score of body mass index, IDWG and serum sodium in addition to significant reduction in mean score of most of IDWG complications such as cramps, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath and lower limb edema but, no change in headache frequency. Recommendation: Arabic, updated, colored booklet regarding developed nutritional guidelines for hemodialysis patients should be available in each hemodialysis hall and given to each hemodialysis patient. Orientation about developed nutritional guidelines for hemodialysis patient and periodically and continuously evaluation of hemodialysis patients’ knowledge and interdialytic weight gain.
