Abstract

This dissertation presented a source localization strategy to identify the possible source location (correlated with traffic flow) of an airborne contaminant (i.e., attributed to traffic), using in field measurements, to investigate the spatial relationship between air quality and traffic flow patterns. In addition, it presented a novel traffic signal controller that is able to adapt signal plans based on the observed traffic state without using historical data. The developed control system is de-centralized, which will increase both its scalability and robustness. The proposed controller was evaluated on traffic scenarios that represent those found in the real-world, which ensures that the controller is applicable to real situations. The proposed controller is capable of alleviating congestion as well as reducing emissions and enhancing air quality.
