Abstract

Non-degradable wastes accumulation is considered as one of the factors affecting the quality of the environment in Egypt. Due to the high volume of these wastes, large landfill space is needed for disposal every year. On the other hand, roadway network constitutes the major factor in the sustainable development of Egypt and, in fact, the traditional asphaltic material already used in paving of Egyptian roads (asphalt cement of penetration grade 60/70) is known to be brittle and hard in cold weather and soft in hot environment. The present work is designed to using non degradable wastes such as waste plastic bottles of type polyethylene terephthalate (WPET) and waste polyurethane (WPUR) as asphalt modifiers to improve its performance and improving hot mixes asphalt characteristics as rutting resistances at high temperature to decrease the cost of roads maintenance and increasing the service life time of pavement in addition to producing an attractive solution to get rid of some types of non-degradable wastes to help in obtaining on a clean environment. To achieve the aim of this work, WPUR and WPET before and after chemical recycling were used as asphalt modifiers in percentages ranging from 2% to 10 % (w/w) separately to prepare polymer modified asphalt (PMA) samples. The prepared PMA samples were characterized physically, chemically in addition to penetration index (P.I), colloidal stability index (C.I), Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and mechanical properties using dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and compared to virgin asphalt sample to choose the optimum addition content. The most suitable PMA samples were used to prepare hot mix asphalt (HMA) sample and finally evaluated using Marshall test. The results concluded that; all the prepared modified asphalt had high hardness as they had lowest penetration, high values of both of softening points, viscosity, TGA, colloidal stability and rutting resistance. Also, the prepared asphalt mixes using chemically treated waste PET have ductility (flexibility) values like original sample and best Marshall characteristics (flow and stability), using the waste PET which is never destroyed in short period of time which means that using these types of wastes is considered one of the most routes preferable for those types of wastes. increasing the pavement performance and introducing an added value to some types of non-degradable wastes in Egypt are other goals of this thesis.
