Abstract

Reducing the own-weight of the concrete parts is the subject of many studies. It becomes important due to the wide use of reinforced concrete elements in many constructions. In this study the Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) blocks was used as a lightweight infill material in reinforced concrete beams. To investigate the effect of infilling reinforced concrete beams with AAC blocks on their flexural and shear behavior, two groups of beams are considered and tested. Each group has three different beams. The first beam is a solid or reference beam. The second beam was infilled by AAC blocks having 100mm thick ribs. The third beam was also infilled with AAC blocks but having 40mm thick ribs. The first group of beams is experimentally tested for flexure whereas the other group is experimentally tested for shear. Three dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis based on ANSYS 15.0-package was carried-out. The output results of all modeled beams were compared with the experimental results. For infilled beams, the experimental test results and the numerical results were matching. The flexural capacity of the infilled beams were greater than that of the solid beam. The failure load of the infilled beam with 40mm thick ribs was less than those of the other beams when tested for shear. When tested in shear, the solid or reference beam yields a shear failure mode whereas the infilled beam results in a diagonal tension failure mode.
