Abstract

This thesis could be considered as a start point to a new trend based on musical analogy inspiration in urban design, in order to reach unique, smart, and contemporary urban design. By searching for the trend which may include this vision, parametric urbanism is the perfect one as it includes various approaches which focus on numerical and mathematical analysis to study the effect of this analysis on urban design. While the main subject is a musical analogy, the research explained the relation between music and urban design to apply this relation during the urban design process. The process has been applied twice, the first one was to find the music which has been extracted from the urban analysis, and the second one was from music to urban design. The first procedure included one of the most important historical areas in Mansoura (Elmokhtalat Street) as a case study. Focusing on its skylines and converting it to numerical values facilitated applying the methodology which aims to find the music that resulted from the urban analysis. Moving on the second one, the research selected Alf Leila w Leila - to popular singer Um Kalthoum – to apply the methodology from the start point of the urban design process to reach musical urban design. There are different software applications which have been used to apply thesis methodology, for instance; Mathematica software, AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, MIDICSV software, Notation player software, and finally www.rechneronline.de website. Finally, by comparing Elmokhtalat Street with the resulted street from the musical analogy, it is obvious that the last one has many positives than Elmokhtalat, which means the use of musical analogy in urban design highly recommended to reach unique, smart, flexible, and contemporary urban design. The Structure of Thesis The title of the study is (The Use of musical analogy in urban design), the study is divided into two parts; the first one includes a literature review that gives two results; urban parameters as well as musical ruler measurement. The second part will discuss the practical study to reach the musical analogy in the selected case study. First part: Chapter One: Introduction. Chapter two, three: Literature review to get musical ruler measurement. Second Part : - Application study. This part shows the selected case study’s background as well as its details, however the stages of the process to apply the aforementioned ruler measurement to reach the musical analogy that has been resulted from the urban design. Third part : - Discussion & Conclusion.
