Abstract

In this study, a passive heat transfer device – thermosyphon – was used to extract the waste heat energy from the exhaust of a diesel engine with the help of the density differences between the liquid and vapor phases of the working fluid, and the gravity force. Some heat were absorbed through the thermosyphon and the working fluid at the evaporator section, then the working fluid gave off its latent heat at the condenser section throughout cooling water. The thesis is organized in five chapters as follows: In chapter 1, some basic definitions and theories that are related to the heat recovery, thermosyphon, and pollutants in diesel exhaust. In chapter 2, some worldwide related studies to the thermosyphon performance, heat recovery applications, and diesel exhaust pollutants. In chapter 3, the experimental methods that had been followed including the experiment layout, devices, and the procedures taken. In chapter 4, the presentation of the results throughout statistical insights, graphs and tables with an explanatory analysis of the observations. In chapter 5, the conclusion of the experiment and the observed results alongside with recommendations for extended studies.
