Abstract

Nowadays; design, fabrication and erection of steel structures take a place at different locations as a result of the steel material advantages. Therefore, engineers may require the use of widely accepted steel design codes and they are faced with the challenge of being competent with several design specifications for particular material type. American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and EUROCODE 3 (EC3) are the most widely accepted steel structure design specifications that utilize limit state principles with some similarities and differences in application. Hereby a study has been undertaken to put together the design equations presented in Egyptian Code of Practice (E.C.P), AISC and EC3 codes in a single document, to identify the similarities and the differences in calculated capacities to facilitate rapid learning of either of the specifications with prior knowledge of the other. Because of the wide scope of specifications, only fundamental failure modes are considered in this thesis. Resistance equations, allowable stress, safety factors are directly compared with each other wherever possible using clear tables and curves. To make this comparison, a steel program was built to get results, charts, similarities and differences for all codes. After developing a computer program for design with different codes, it was easy to obtain intelligent design tables with the three codes to help engineers instead of using code equations and get the best economic section with its necessary details. Engineers can get very clear, economic and final results by using the present program and can gain a much experience through a short way. There is a program manual, to show how to use the program and get the results of design. Outline Of The Thesis: Chapter (1): contains an introduction for the thesis and the research objectives. Chapter (2): contains literature review, codes development, international steel codes and an explanation for methods of design. Chapter (3): contains an explanation for the present program contents and introduces an idea about the ...computer program components, explain how to use the program in the design, flow-charts..for program parts and the way to select the required section. Chapter (4): contains confirmation of program results, before using the present program. This is achieved by taking some solved examples from some references and comparing them with program results. Chapter (5): contains a complete comparison between AISC, EC3 and E.C.P (ASD and LRFD). Comparison contains the load combination, steel grade, section classification behavior of member under axial load, flexural bending and combination of bending and axial load...(compression) from where equations, factors and economic. Chapter (6): contains the summary, conclusion and the recommendation for future work in this field.
