Abstract As a consequence of massive population growth in Egypt over the past few years, the demand on low-income housing projects has significantly increased forcing the government to rapidly construct large number of residential units with the same prototype design with a conventional building material regardless the environmental design treatments and recommendations in hot-arid climate of Egypt and its economic aspects . The excessive usage of these inappropriate building material in order to speed up construction process has in turn rise up these housing unit’s total cost and negatively impacted human thermal comfort in addition to the indoor air quality leading to an increase in energy consumption which. On the other hand, modern Researches headed to the possibility of using of alternative sustainable building material could help in achieving affordable green homes with high quality for low-income citizens at the lowest possible cost. The major objective of this research is to evaluate the thermal performance of the existing Egyptian low-income housing (case study) and examining the influence of replacing the current conventional materials with a sustainable materials in the different elements of building in order to achieve human satisfaction and thermal comfort. It also provides an analytical study of international experiences on successful utilization of sustainable construction material in an friendly environmental similar projects. The performance of the case study evaluated using computer simulation program (design Builder). This research process led to a strategy of enhancing these types of housing projects in Egypt. |
