Abstract

The present study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of using an ESP on-line course on developing reading comprehension skills. The target reading comprehension sub-skills were: Recognizing difficult words, Identifying information, Predicting, and Making relationship. The researcher used the quasi-experimental design. The participants in the study included one experimental group (N=30) freshmen at the Faculty of Commerce, Mansoura University. The instruments used were ‘’Needs analysis questionnaire, reading comprehension skills questionnaire and a pre-post reading comprehension test’’. The study was conducted during the first semester in the academic year 2017/2018. Validity and reliability were verified before administrating the pre-post reading comprehension test. Results reveal that there were statistically significant differences between the pre-post reading comprehension tests in favor of the posttest. These results indicated that the ESP course had an effect on developing reading comprehension skills for freshmen at the Faculty of Commerce, Mansoura University.
