Abstract

Objectives: The goal of this study was to investigate the possible effect of popular sugar feeding types on some morphological, biological and physiological characteristics of worker, queen and drone honey bee. Methods and Results: The present study was carried out in the Apiary of Beekeeping Research Center at the Ministry of Agriculture during two years 2016 and 2017. The treatments were applied on 15 colonies from Carniolan bees (Apis mellifera carnica). The colonies were fed with Sugar cane, sugar beet, sugar beet + Citrus honey, Citrus honey and control (natural feeding). The obtained results clarify that: The directional asymmetry of workers and drones wing character were not related to the type of feeding, but the composite fluctuating asymmetry (CFA) of vein distances of workers were higher in cane sugar-feeding than in honey-feeding colonies, while CFA of vein angels of drones were higher in cane sugar-feeding than in honey-feeding colonies. The mean weight of honey bee workers showed significant difference between cane sugar feeding and control (natural feeding). No significant difference was observed between treatments concerning total body weight and thorax weight of bee drones, but the thorax / body of bee drone ratio showed significant difference between Honey feeding treatment and cane sugar feeding. There were no significant differences between all feeding treatments on the weight, thorax width and the diameter of the spermatheca in honey bee queen, whereas a significant effect of feeding treatment was recorded on the number of queens ovarioles. The worker brood activity showed significant differences between treatments in fifth, sixth and seventh measurement. But the drones brood activity showed significant differences between treatments in second, third and sixth measurement. The phenol oxidase activity, total antioxidant and total protein showed a significant difference between all treatments in both adult and larvae and glucose content showed significant difference between all treatments for adult but not for larvae haemolymph. The antibacterial investigation of honey bee larvae haemolymph under the effect of different sugar on Staphylococcus spp. showed that, the inhibition zones vary between treatments, being high in beet+honey and low in beet sugar. The control showed the highest inhibition zone.
