Abstract

There is a great influence between human’s behavior and the surrounding environment, whether natural or built. Sustainability is becoming very important in Egypt due the severe social, economic and environmental problems. Social scientists are drawing attention to the necessity of the ”human” factor in any potential solution regarding environmental problems. This study focuses on the role of the sustainable university in promoting pro-environmental behaviors among students. Usually, studies about sustainability on campuses focus on the environmental aspect of sustainability strategies taken by the university, while neglecting the human side. That is the focal point of this study. The approach to tackle this subject contains two steps: first, a literature review about Environmental Behavior Studies, the relationship between human behavior and architecture, pro-environmental behaviors, factors influencing them, different strategies to promote them, and methods to measure them. It discusses the role of universities in promoting a culture of sustainability and pro-environmental behavior within their communities. Then comes sustainability practices in STARS top-rated university campuses, with a focus on the behavioral impact of STARS categories. The second step is the analytical field study, where a descriptive study was conducted among three Egyptian universities, in which their sustainability strategies were analyzed according to AASHE, and a questionnaire was distributed among representative samples of students to test which factors have more effect on pro-environmental behaviors, and which pro-environmental behaviors are the strongest among students on the three campuses. A modification in STARS is proposed, to take pro-environmental behavior of students into accounts when auditing sustainable campuses. Also, a strategy based on factors affecting pro-environmental behavior is designed to help Kafr Elsheikh University on its journey towards sustainable development.
