Abstract

This thesis presents a theoretical-practical study which is the transient assessment for a group of induction motors during starting in medium voltage networks. The assessment also includes the starting effects on other nearby running units in different operating conditions. It is based on a practical case study which is a three-phase medium voltage induction motor (630 kW) that is installed inside an agricultural drain pump station and started at different scenarios. The contribution of this thesis is the proposal of a generalized two-step methodology to study the performance of such motor. The methodology is performed through two stages: parameters estimation and dynamic simulation. The equivalent circuit parameters of induction motor are estimated by finite element analysis (FEMM) based on its real dimensions. Then the estimated parameters are forwarded to a dynamic model that is built with MATLAB/SIMULINK where a thorough performance analysis can be achieved. The approach validity is verified by experimental measurements and tested on the said case study motor with the help of a power analyzer equipment. Thus, assuring that the approach can be used to estimate the parameters and study the performance for any other three-phase induction motor. The verified model is used to perform six practical scenarios based on the real station operating instructions. For each studied scenario, a group of operation variables such as voltage dip, its duration and voltage regulation are illustrated and compared in a tabular form considering the recommended adjustments for the protection relay settings.
