Abstract

Congenital heart defect is one of the major congenital irregularities among children, representing as a major worldwide wellbeing problem. Aim: this study aimed to evaluate a guiding program for mothers to improve the quality of life of their children with congenital heart disease. Design: A quasi-experimental design was used. Setting: The study was carried out at the Cardiology Department and Outpatient Clinic of Mansoura University Children Hospital. Subjects: A convenience sample of 70 mothers and their children with congenital heart defects, either cyanotic or a cyanotic, their age ranged from 3 to 12 years, from both sex at the previously mentioned setting. Tools: Data were collected using three tools; tool (I) was an interview questionnaire used to collect socio-demographic data, for both mothers and their children with CHD, and assessment of mothers’ knowledge and practice about congenital heart defects, tool (II) was (QOL scale), used to assess the quality of life for studied children and tool (III) was the guiding program used to improve the quality of life of children with congenital heart disease. Results: high statistical significant differences were found between mothers, knowledge score and practices immediate post and after 3months intervention as well as statistically significant differences between immediately post-program mothers knowledge score and immediately post-program QOL score for studied children. Conclusion: The study concluded that mothers’ knowledge, reported practice, and quality of life of their children with congenital heart disease were improved after the implementation of the guiding program either immediately or 3 months later than before its implementation. Recommendation: Organizing training programs for mothers and their children with CHD in their homes or in public life such as nutrition, sports, and protection from infection.
