Abstract Background: Postnatal care is one of the most pivotal maternal health care not only for prevention of the problems and complications but also for decrease of maternal morbidity and mortality. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess postpartum information needs and mothers preparedness for self-care and newborn care. Design: The study design is a cross sectional descriptive research. Setting: This study was conducted at the postpartum inpatient ward and the postnatal room in the labor and delivery department, Mansoura University Hospitals, Dakahlia Governorate. Sample: A purposive sample of 142postpartum women. Tools: Two tools were used for data collection, a structured interview questionnaire and Likert scale for assessment of postpartum learning needs from the perspective of mothers. Results: Maternal knowledge about postpartum self-care and newborn care was moderate but there are some areas which almost postpartum women not prepared at all about it in both self-care as proper eating (70.4%), exercising (35.9%) . Also there was a positive correlation between mothers preparedness about self-care and with parity but no relation between parity and mothers preparedness about newborn-care. There was a statistical significant difference between Level of education of mothers and mothers new-born-care preparedness of postpartum women and also there was highly statistical significant difference between occupational status of mothers and mothers new-born-care preparedness of postpartum, there were lack of information regarding proper eating, exercise, sleeping during postpartum period. The women’s’ needs of information are breast care, diet, care of episiotomy and minor discomfort and in area of baby care signs and symptoms of baby sickness, measuring body temperature and cord care are the most needed information. Conclusion: New mother s have many learning needs during postpartum period. Recommendation: Develop and implement mothers classes during antenatal period about postpartum learning needs. |
