Abstract

Eggplant (Solanum Melongena L.) is among the most important vegetable crops grown in Egypt for exportation and local consumption. Compost is one of the most major sources of fertilization. The application of compost positively affects the structure, porosity, water holding capacity, compression strength, nutrient content and organic matter content of the soil , consequently improves plant growth, crop yield and crop quality. Micronutrients such as iron (Fe) and boron (B) are elements with specific and essential physiological functions in plants. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the influence of organic fertilization (animal compost) with foliar spraying of boron and iron elements on improving the fruit yield and quality of the eggplants grown in an alluvial soil during the summer seasons of 2018 and 2019. The combined effects of boron, iron and compost on growth and yield of eggplants were investigated by combining three compost rates and three spraying rate of both boron and iron .The used experimental design was split-split plot design. There are 3 factors under experimentation: Main plots were compost treatments which included three levels i.e.(C1): animal compost was applied at rate of 20 m3fed-1 two weeks before sowing,(C2): animal compost was applied at rate of 30 m3fed-1 two weeks before sowing) and (C3): animal compost was applied at rate of 40 m3fed-1 two weeks before sowing .Sub plots were the foliar boron fertilization treatments i.e.,(B0):0.00 mg boron L-1 , (B1) : 100 mg boron L-1 using [Calcium borate (Ca3 (BO3)2)] and (B2): 200 mg boron L-1 using [Calcium borate (Ca3 (BO3)2)] .Sub sub plots were the foliar iron fertilization treatments i.e.,(F0):0.00 mg iron L-1 ),(F1): 200 mg iron L-1 using [Fe-EDTA 12%Fe] and (F2): 400 mg iron L-1 using [Fe-EDTA 12%Fe]. Data recorded 1- Vegetative Growth: Number of lateral branches, Number of leaves, Leaves fresh and dry weights (g/plant),Plant height (cm),Leaf area (cm2) was determined for the fifth leafs from apical bud and Fresh and dry weights (g/plant). 2- Chemical constituent in the leaves: Chlorophyll content , carotene content and mineral content of leaves (N, P, K, Fe and B content of leaves %) at three different growth stages( 45,60 and 90 day from transplanting). 3- Mineral content and quality parameters of eggplant fruits: Mineral content of fruits( N, P, K, Fe and B content of fruits %), anthocyanin fruit content (mg/100g FW),total phenolic compounds fruit content (mg/g Dw) and total soluble solids content (TDS %) of the fresh eggplant fruits. 4- Fruit yield: early and total yield (ton/fed).
