Abstract

Breast cancer is that cancer which forms in the tissue of the breast. Breast cancer is known as one of the most common cancers after skin cancer. This type of cancer can occur in both women and men, but it’s most common in women. In this study, we will shed light on the treatment of breast cancer using radiation. Radiation therapy is one of the most effective ways in cancer treatment. It is usually used as an adjuvant therapy to other ways of treatment. Radiotherapy depends on the use of radiation for destroying cancer cells. It can be a curative or palliative treatment. Radiation has the ability to kill cancer cells by breaking up its molecules. It also affects the ability of the cell dividing. Many sources of radiation can be used such as gamma rays, x-rays and other many types. Radiation treatment has two types. First, the external radiation therapy in which radiation is directed from a remote source. Second, the internal radiation therapy also called brachytherapy in which a radioactive source is placed inside the patient’s body and close to cancer cells. Our study is interested in left and right breast cancer treatment using external radiation therapy. linear accelerator (linac) represents that remote source which directs the radiation to the tumor from outside the patient’s body. This study shows a statistic compression for different treatment planning techniques using a treatment planning system. The three techniques are 3-Dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy (3D-CRT), Field in Field with Conformal Radiation Therapy (FIF) and Inverse-Planned Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IP-IMRT). It was performed to analyze Planning target volume (PTV) homogeneity, Conformity index (CI), Homogeneity index (HI) and Organs at risk (OAR) dose using the Dose volume histogram (DVH) analysis. To finally be able to conclude which technique performing more better. from the results we found that all the three techniques allow good dose coverage to the PTV where 95% of the target volume is covered with 95% of the prescribed dose for both left and right breast cancer. Each technique was found to have the ability to reduce doses to specific organs. while IP-IMRT has the ability to reduce doses to high-doses-areas. Oppositely the 3D-CRT has the ability to reduce doses to low-doses-areas. Finally, we recommend FIF technique for left and right-sided breast cancer because of the two tangential Fields used as, the breast is not an organ inside the body. Also, its low MU comparing with other techniques. And simple setup where there are no wedges and there are only two segments. finally, it has a good coverage for the target Volume.
