Abstract

Oxygen therapy is widely available and commonly used in treatment of hospitalized patients with chest disorders. So, the nursing staff should have oxygen therapy related knowledge and practice based on educational guidelines.Health-care professionals (HCPs) should have knowledge and skills regarding O2 therapy and familiar with its uses and limitations. Additionally, they should be aware of possible dangers and side effects of this medication, so, it should be administered carefully and according to the safety guidelines.Oxygen should be administered by staffs that are trained in oxygen administration. Safe prescription and safe administration of oxygen are closely linked. The healthcare professional who administers the oxygen therapy (usually a nurse) should be fully trained and should follow local or national protocols. These staff should use suitable devices and flow rates in order to achieve the right saturation range according to patients conditions as 94–98% for most acutely ill patients or 88–92% for patient-specific target range for those at risk of hypercapnic respiratory failure and according to ages of patients to achieve SaO2 of 94- 98% if aged <70 years and 92- 98% if aged > 70 years. In patients with hypercapnia should be 88- 92%.
