Abstract

Objectives : The present study will be aimed to select the appropriate power and irrigation system that can be used to irrigate the farm and investigate the effect of the irrigation system on soil and climate. Methods & Results : Split area of 36 m2, 144 m2, and 36 m2 was designed for the following three methods: Drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation and furrow irrigation. Onions were planted in these areas. Three moisture content levels were selected for this study, namely; 100 % (M1), 75 % (M2), and 50 % (M3) of the available water, and a comparison between diesel and solar energy system. Results : The results show that the distribution of moisture under the sprinkler system was almost in uniform in the horizontal directions. Generally the moisture content decreases at deeper soil layers or being far from the dripper or sprinkler and furrow systems. The electrical conductivity (EC) value increases in horizontal and vertical directions and so chloride. The data indicated that salts are accumulated according to direction of water flow. Generally the EC and chlorides concentration increased by decreasing the quantities of water applied rates. The salinity increased in the following order : drip > Sprinkler > furrow irrigations. Comparing the three different applications water under each irrigation systems, a significant relation was remarked. Meanwhile when the three systems irrigation is compared due to the application water, no significant relation obtained. Under drip irrigation, each kW, of power produced 512.9 kg of yield in the first season increasing by 76 and 68 % than the sprinkler and the furrow system, respectively.
