Abstract

External prestressing has been rapidly spread in the last century. More than 50% of bridges all over the world have been constructed using external prestressing technique. High strength concrete has become more and more important in constructing concrete elements due to its mechanical properties. In this research seven externally prestressed high strength concrete beams with central openings have been experimentally loaded to failure to investigate their behavior. Numerically the seven beams have been modeled in ANSYS program (a three dimensional non linear finite element analysis program) to compute their failure loads. The experimentally results have been compared with that numerically obtained. Eventually, a proposed equation has been generated using ANSYS program. That equation can predict failure loads of more than 70 externally prestressed high strength beams with rectangular central openings. Finally, we hope that this research will be important for all structural engineers all over the world.
