Abstract

The relationship between architects and water management needs to be reconfigured; because water efficiency is now more necessary due to the water crisis facing Egypt and the whole world. Worldwide, domestic sector consumes about 10% of the total water consumption; although households are the smallest consumer of water but they have an enormious potential impact; and water use in this sector is expected to go upwards by 80% over the next 25 years. Through its design, construction, and operation, housing projects represents a significant point of water consumption. In an attempt to reduce the upfront costs, in social housing, the selection of materials and strategies does not always go hand-in-hand with achieving water efficiency. In order to make a project water efficient and reduce water footprint; efficient integrated strategies should be implemented since the early stages of the project from site selection to design, construction and operation; and this will affect both direct and embodied water footprints. The research problem is represented in having no obvious holistic vision for national water management plans regarding the development of water efficient housing projects. The research aims at Setting criteria and guidelines for implementing water footprint mitigation in social housing projects. The research consists of 8 chapters; the first chapter represents the introduction and studies the global water situation. The second chapter studies the gap in the literature review. The third chapter illustrates the methodology used in the research, which depends on water footprint assessment. The fourth chapter analyzes the water efficiency in social housing projects. The fifth chapter illustrates the case studies, in Egypt and Brazil, through field visits and observations on water efficiency. The sixth chapter shows the water footprint assessment for the two case studies which includes setting goals, WFP measurements, sustainability assessment and response formulation. Results are shown in chapter 7 in addition to discussion about the methodology and the findings of the research. Integrative guidelines for mitigating WFP in social housing projects are introduced in chapter 8, in addition to novel contributions, future research and recommendations. The research concludes that mitigating water footprint in social housing projects is necessary to achieve sustainability, and that reducing the costs in social housing projects is not the optimal solution as water conservation will have more value in the long term.
