Abstract

This study was applied on 200 cow’s milk samples, which collected randomly from different cities in Libya, were included 53 raw milk samples, 27 pasteurized milk samples and 120 UHT milk samples. The study aimed to detection qualitative and quantitative antibiotic Beta- lactam residues in cow’s milk samples. Examined qualitative by using Delvo test SP NT, the results revealed that antibiotic residues were 75.47% and 48.15% in raw cow milk and pasteurized milk samples, respectively. All the sterilized milk samples tested were 100% negative for a test. High liquid performance chromatography (HPLC) was used as confirmatory method for identification of Beta-lactam residues in positive samples with Delvo test SP NT. The detection of Ampicillin and Amoxicillin residues in raw cow milk samples were 5/14 (35.71%) and 10/14 (71.42%), respectively. The concentration mean 4.88±1.02µg/kg of Ampicillin residues, with 4 samples exceed MRL of standard. The mean 12.22±6.18µg/kg of Amoxicillin residues, with 10 samples above MRLs standard. Confirmed Ampicillin and Amoxicillin residues were 2/6 (33.33%) and 5/6 (83.33%) in pasteurized milk samples, respectively. With concentration limits the mean 3.45±0.25µg/kg of Ampicillin residues and 14.06±3.97µg/kg of Amoxicillin residues with 5 samples exceed MRLs standard for Amoxicillin residues. The confirmation of Tetracycline and Oxytetracycline residues by using HPLC in raw milk samples were 12/14 (85.71%) and 11/14 (78.57%), respectively. With concentration limits a mean value was 86.24±56.60µg/kg and 108.40±54.15µg/kg, respectively. Four samples and 5 samples were exceed MRLs standard for tetracycline and oxytetrcycline, respectively. Contamination of pasteurized milk samples by tetracycline residues and oxytetracycline residues were 5/6 (83.33%) and 6/6 (100%), respectively. The detection limits of Tetracycline and Oxytetracycline residues in pasteurized milk samples were the mean value 112.50±89.04µg/kg and 124.30±81.74µg/kg, respectively. Only 2 samples and 3 samples were above MRLs standard for tetracycline and oxytetracycline, respectively. The results of this study indicated that all examined sterilized milk samples showed that antibiotic residues were not detected by using Delvo SP NT test and high-performance liquid chromatography. The economic importance and public health significance of antibiotic residues in market milk were discussed. In addition, the control measures for improving the safety of milk and to safeguard the consumers were suggested.
