Abstract

The smart home automation extended to college laboratories to form a smart lab. This study provides a low cost control and monitoring system for a smart computer lab using LabVIEW software and Arduino Uno connected to sensors. The proposed system consists of three subsystems: The first subsystem is an outdoor intelligent management of the computer laboratory. It includes controlling the entry of people to the lab at official working hours and protecting the laboratory from thefts at unofficial working hours. The second subsystem is an indoor intelligent management of computer lab. It includes firstly, the management of the educational process such as recording the student’s attendance. Secondly, securing the lab in terms of detecting smoke and fires and saving electrical energy. The third subsystem is monitoring for supervisors. It includes the outputs of the previous subsystems like daily report, warning bulbs, controlling of electrical devices inside Lab and showing the state of the computer devices. In the first subsystem, a real time face recognition agent is implemented for controlling the entry of people to the computer lab. This agent composes of two main parts: real time face recognition and door control. OpenCV libraries is used for real time face detection and PCA algorithm is used for real time face recognition and also sending a security alert message to the supervisor. In order to open door automatically, a hardware circuit was designed to connect a computer with an electrical door lock. This agent is based on using the data acquisition tool and vision assistant of LabVIEW. In the second subsystem, an audio processing agent is used to record student’s attendance. Student’s identification is verified by voiceprint through using DTW algorithm to compare the speaker’s voice signal with pre-stored voice signals in the database, and extracting the main features of the speaker’s voice signal using MFCC. Secondly, fire and smoke detection agent was applied for protecting the computer Lab. Arduino Uno is used as the microcontroller at the transmitter part to control the sensor nodes and give alert then send SMS message to supervisor when over smoke and flame are detected. Finally, rationalizing electrical consumption agent is implemented by embedding the electrical appliances such as lights, air-conditioners, fans and projectors in the laboratory with sensors to reduce the energy consumption. The proposed system was tested based on actual data sensed by sensors and the results showed that the proposed system works with high efficiency.
