Abstract

ABSTRACT : Comparing Different Codes in Design of the Plate Girder and the Connection of Steel Structures. The main objective of this thesis is to research the plate girders and the connections between the structures of steel. Competents relied on each of their predecessors to establish a helpful thumb rule that would be followed accordingly. In accordance with the mindset of each engineering society, different rules were developed, some of them followed only theoretical results on the ground, regardless of the real difference, and others tried to adjust the theoretical outcomes of what is happening in practice. The preparation of a steel design programme according to the Egyptian codes is therefore necessary. It is very important for designers to easily compare different codes (Egyptian, American, European) by using computer programmes in plate girders design and connections. The main objective of the research is to develop the plate girders and the connections of steel structure in different codes and to study the comparison between the different steel structure codes. Some results will be interpreted using computer programmes. The programme is based on the Visual Basic in the present study. The NET language and Excel spreadsheets are used to produce what the designers need from the codes in a straightforward, simple method. The thesis includes a comparison between the Egyptian codes (“Allowable Stress Design” (ASD), “Load and Resistance Factor Design” (LRFD), and “Allowable Stress Design”/“Load and Resistance Factor Design”(ASD/LRFD)), American codes (“Allowable Stress Design” (ASD), and “Load and Resistance Factor Design” (LRFD)), and European code (part 1-5 for plated structures & part 1-8 for design of joints). In addition, design charts are obtained to help engineers design plate girders and types of connections and to achieve the most economical design. These charts can be used easily and effectively. This study introduced the programme to design the plate girders and the connections of steel structure in different codes (Egyptian, American, European). By this programme design charts are obtained that help engineers design plate girders and connections types and get the most economical design.
